Electrical permits and inspections for home EV chargers in Edmonton: what homeowners should expect

Short answer: A new 240V Level 2 charging circuit or newly wired EV energy-management equipment requires an electrical permit and inspection coordination. When you hire a contractor, confirm that the permit and required inspections are included in the written scope.

When is an electrical permit required for home EV charging?

Edmonton lists EV charging station installations, garage wiring and additions to electrical systems as work requiring an electrical permit. This includes a new dedicated branch circuit, hardwired charger, EV receptacle, subpanel or newly wired EVEMS arrangement. Simply plugging approved equipment into a suitable existing receptacle is different from installing or altering wiring.

The permit issuer depends on the property address. St. Albert, Sherwood Park / Strathcona County, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc and Beaumont have their own municipal or designated permit processes. Confirm the applicable authority, submission details and inspection stages before starting; Edmonton’s application process should not be assumed to apply in every community.

What Canadian Electrical Code checks apply to an EV charger installation?

Canadian Electrical Code Section 8 addresses circuit loading and demand, while Section 86 addresses EV charging systems. The applicable Alberta code, interpretations and equipment instructions shape the actual design.

  • Service load calculation: Is the home’s service able to support the proposed charging load, or is suitable approved EVEMS needed? Read Can you charge an EV on a 100-amp service?
  • Continuous-load sizing: Typical residential circuits with 80%-rated protection must limit continuous charging accordingly. Breakers, conductors, terminations and settings must work together.
  • Approved equipment and location: Equipment must carry a recognized Canadian approval mark, such as CSA or cUL, and have appropriate enclosure and temperature ratings. A US-only approval mark is not sufficient evidence of Canadian approval.
  • Underground wiring: Detached-garage installations require suitable burial protection, transitions, feeder sizing and garage distribution. Depth depends on the route, surface and protection; there is no single depth for every property.

Who pulls the permit, and how does the inspection process work?

Contractor permit applications follow the municipality’s licensing and Master Electrician requirements. A homeowner permit is a separate route for an eligible owner doing their own work; it is not a substitute for the contractor’s permit when you hire someone. Edmonton limits homeowner eligibility by occupancy, dwelling type and work scope.

Ask for the permit holder and inspection responsibilities in writing. Revolt coordinates the permit and inspection process through its confirmed Master Electrician arrangement.

  1. Approve the scope and quote. Confirm the proposed equipment, work and exclusions.
  2. Arrange the permit. Required permits must be issued before regulated work begins.
  3. Install and commission. Required intermediate inspections may occur during construction, before wiring or trenches are covered. Testing, settings and the customer walkthrough form part of completion.
  4. Coordinate the required inspection and closeout. Follow the permit issuer’s instructions, including any corrections. Edmonton normally requests a site inspection; photo or video review is used only where the authority expressly permits it.

Do not backfill or conceal work before the required inspection release. A contractor’s testing does not replace the authority’s inspection.

Questions to ask before accepting an EV charger installation quote

  • Is the permit included, and who is the permit holder?
  • Who books inspections and resolves required corrections?
  • Which circuit rating, charger output and EVEMS settings will be documented?
  • What testing, app setup and walkthrough are included?
  • What workmanship warranty applies, and what is excluded?

Revolt includes a customer walkthrough, app setup where applicable and a one-year workmanship warranty. Equipment warranties are separate. Explore home EV charger installation in Edmonton and what affects installation cost before comparing your written scope.

Permit references: City of Edmonton residential electrical permits and Alberta electrical STANDATA. Confirm current requirements with the permit issuer for your address.

For panel photos, open only the outer door if it is safe to do so. Leave the inner protective cover in place, never touch wiring, and skip the photo if access appears damaged or unsafe.

Final equipment suitability, charging output and pricing depend on assessment of your property and an agreed written scope. An article or panel photo cannot confirm the installation design.
