Yes, EV charging can be possible on a 100-amp service. Whether it works for your home depends on the existing electrical demand, the charging equipment and how the installation is designed.

Before budgeting for a 200-amp upgrade, start with a practical question: what charging setup can your home support, and will it meet your driving needs?

Start with the home's electrical demand

A service rating does not tell you how much capacity remains for another load. An electrician needs to assess the existing installation and complete the appropriate load calculation. The practical implication is that an empty breaker position alone cannot establish whether a charger will fit electrically. Space for a circuit and capacity to supply it are separate questions.

Tell the electrician about planned additions, too. A second EV, heat pump, hot tub or renovation could change the demand the project needs to accommodate. BC Hydro's capacity guide also recommends including future electrical projects in the assessment.

Three options to discuss with your electrician

1. A charging rate the home can support

Ask what charging output the assessment allows, then compare that with how much energy you need to replace between trips. Charger power affects charging time, along with the vehicle's battery and conditions such as cold weather. EPCOR explains these charging factors.

A useful planning question is: “Will this setup replenish my usual driving during the hours I am parked at home?” Bring your daily distance and charging window to that conversation. Have the electrician select and configure suitable equipment for the assessed capacity.

2. An EV energy management system

An EV energy management system, or EVEMS, controls the charging load so it can work within the available electrical capacity. Load management equipment can monitor demand and automatically control loads as household use changes. BC Hydro describes how load management works.

For your planning, this means asking how the proposed system affects charging availability during your normal routine. Ask what it monitors, how it controls the charger and whether the resulting charging window will meet your needs.

Also ask whether a proposed “smart” charger includes the required load management equipment. App controls or scheduling features alone do not establish that the installation can operate within the service capacity.

3. A service upgrade when the project calls for it

If the assessment shows that the proposed charging setup and other electrical needs cannot be accommodated, a service upgrade may be necessary. Ask the electrician to explain the limiting factor and the alternatives considered.

Do you need a permit in Edmonton?

Start with the details you already know:

  • Your vehicle: the EV you own or plan to buy, and any charger you have already purchased.
  • Your parking location: an attached garage, detached garage or outdoor space, plus your preferred charger position.
  • Your driving routine: approximate daily kilometres and the hours the vehicle is usually parked at home.
  • Your future plans: another EV or other major electrical additions.
  • Accessible photos: the panel exterior, visible labels and proposed charging location. Leave electrical covers in place.

These details help start the discussion. Photos alone cannot confirm the home's available capacity or replace an electrical assessment.
